VERMIN CONTROL
THINK ABOUT RODENTS.
Whether you are housing birds, chickens, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or dogs spend some time thinking about the problems you may face with rodents and other pests such as weasels, stoats, foxes and badgers.
Over 50 years of having to learn painful lessons I now lean towards “the safer the better” option, and my own aviaries and pens have ½” x ½” mesh floors and roofs because mice and weasels cannot get through.
Mice are annoying but not dangerous - the real villain is a weasel or a stoat as these animals can squeeze through 1 x ½” so again ½” mesh is your only option. Remember these kill aviary birds, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs for fun, not to eat, so ignore them at your peril – To prove the point here is a picture of a weasel squeezing through 1” chicken wire.
Keeping rats out is actually much easier as they rarely get through 1 x ½” wire and 19 gauge is strong enough but don’t be fooled they will take advantage of any weak point in you design.
And finally don’t forget our furry friend the squirrel – They look cute when playing in country parks, but they are still a rodent none the less and they will cause havoc in an aviary so keep them out.
